Tallmadge -- Munroe Elementary School students brought their culinary creations to Tallmadge Middle School Feb. 21 for a cooking contest sponsored by the Munroe Parent Teacher Association.

More than 50 students entered recipes for this year's contest. The students made their recipes at home and brought them to the middle school to be judged by volunteers from a Tallmadge High School government class.

More than 100 people attended the judging and awards event. Participating students were permitted to enter one recipe in one of the following categories: appetizers and snacks, breads and muffins, brownies and bar cookies, cakes, cookies, pies and cheesecakes, and desserts.

The PTA also awarded students in the Best Presentation category.

The winners in each category are as follows:

Appetizers and snacks:

1st Place: Max Blondin's "Max's Maxed-Out Mashed Potato Pie"

2nd Place: Eli Zander's "Fruity Cheese Balls"

3rd Place: Cameron Kruger's "Sweet and Sour Chicken"

Breads and muffins:

1st Place: Caleb Anderson's "Butterscotch Muffins"

2nd Place: Jayden Sapper's "Banana Bread"

3rd Place: N/A

Brownies and bar cookies:

1st Place: Evan Hipkins' "Chocolate Mint Brownie Bites"

2nd Place: Katie Lally's "Layers of Love Chocolate Brownies"

3rd Place: Maddy Dolezal's "Ooey Gooey Butter Cake"


1st Place: Cassie Jeffries' "Buckeye Cake"

2nd Place: Ryan Bradley's "Caramel Cake"

3rd Place: Jacob Berkey's "Boston Cream Pie"

2nd Place: Bryce Sisak's "Bryce's Pudding Pie"

1st Place: Parker Braccio's "Berry Angel Food Dessert"

2nd Place: Ellie Hudak's "Worms & Dirt"

3rd Place: Alexis Davis' "Lil' Piece"

Best Presentation:

Mason Dexter's "Triple Layer Chocolate Cake"

Runner-Up: Makayla Bechter's "Mini Hamburger and French Fries"

John Byron, president of the Munroe PTA, said the organization has put on this event for 30 years.

"We have just carried on the tradition from years past, and the response from the kids and families is great. Everyone seems to have a good time there," he said.

Each participating student in this year's contest will get a digital cookbook with all of the recipes. For those who didn't participate, a free e-mail version of the cookbook or a copy on a CD for a minimal fee can be obtained by e-mailing the Munroe PTA at munroeelementarypta@gmail.com.
