Silver Lake Mayor Bernie Hovey says village officials have heard from a resident who claims that an estate tax settlement that was given to the city of Cuyahoga Falls in October actually belongs to Silver Lake.

Village Solicitor Robert Heydorn says, "Both the city and village are aware of the issue and each is now assessing their options."

"I'd say Bob Heydorn's assessment is pretty accurate," Cuyahoga Falls Mayor Don L. Robart said, referring further inquiries on the matter to the city's law director, Paul A. Janis. Janis declined comment.

City Council member Diana Colavecchio (D-5) has said the settlement in question "was about $1.3 million." According to Colavecchio, that is "about two times larger than estate tax revenue received annually [by the city] in any other year."

City Finance Director Joseph F. Brodzinski told City Council Dec. 3 that the city received the settlement, from a woman in her 80s, in October.

Robart has said the city has chosen to allocate "about two-thirds" of that amount back to its full-time employees in the form of a one-time salary supplement. Pending legislation, if approved, would authorize the city to pay a one-time salary supplement of $3,500 to every full-time employee, both bargaining and non-bargaining, next month. Also proposed is a one-time salary supplement for members of City Council and its clerk in the amount of $1,250.
