Akron -- With the May 15 swearing-in of Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Thomas A. Teodosio, a vacancy has been left in the District 2 seat on Summit County Council.
Since Teodosio is a Democrat, his party is responsible for appointing an interim replacement, per county charter rules.
According to Russell Balthis, executive director of the Summit County Democratic Party, Democratic Precinct Committee members in District 2 will vote at a May 24 meeting to fill the seat, which is set to expire in December 2008.
Former Cuyahoga Falls Council member John Schmidt has expressed interest in the post, Balthis said. No one else had expressed interest that he was aware of as of press time, he said.
Schmidt could not be reached for comment by press time.
Balthis said a majority vote among the 57 District 2 precinct members (there are 380 total in the county) is needed to confirm the interim appointment. He said he expects the new member to be in place by as soon as Council's next regularly scheduled meeting June 4.
The replacement will reinforce the Democrats' hold on Council. After the November 2006 election, Council member Louise Heydorn remains as the lone Republican voice on the panel.
Individuals interested in being considered for the appointment can contact the Democratic Party Headquarters at 330-434-1311.
Teodosio was halfway through his second four-year term on Council. He succeeds Judge Jane Bond who is retiring after serving as Common Pleas Court judge since 1991. His term as judge is six years.
