RITTMAN — Edna Landis will mark her 100th birthday Sept. 5. She was born in 1918, to John R. and Melissa (Rohrer) Landis.
Siblings include an older stepbrother, Clarence Landis, and older stepsister, Mary Landis, both deceased. Her family includes five nephews, Vernon and wife Elizabeth Landis, Ralph (deceased) and wife Shirley Landis, Donald (deceased) and wife Linda Landis, Raymond and wife Lana Landis and James and wife Karen Landis. Edna also has 10 great nieces/nephews, 17 great-great nieces/nephews and 12 great-great-great nieces/nephews.
Edna was born at home in the Medina County community of Acme and raised on a farm on Seville Road. She attended Seville School when all 12 grades were in one building, graduating with the class of 1936. She has spent her entire life in Medina County until moving in February of this year to her present residence at the Apostolic Christian Assisted Living in Rittman. She retired from her career of 32 years as an LPN at Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital, retiring one day before her 70th birthday in September 1988.
Edna loved volunteering for her church and community and worked tirelessly for Wadsworth Meals On Wheels before retiring in her 90s. Edna is a lifetime member of the Bethel Mennonite Church, presently the Bethel Christian Church. Her favorite activities include needlework, painting with watercolor, and quilting with friends at the Seville Day Center. She has donated many beautiful quilts for the Mennonite Relief Sale in Kidron (one purchased for over $7,000). She also was known in her neighborhood as "the flower lady" for her beautiful flower garden and found much joy working in her vegetable garden.
Her immediate family will celebrate her 100th birthday at her favorite restaurant, The Barn, in Smithville on her birthday, Sept. 5.
On Sunday, Sept. 9, there will be an open house celebration from 2-4 p.m. for extended family, friends and community, in the Fellowship Hall of the Bethel
Christian Church (formally the Bethel Mennonite Church), 2684 Seville Road, Rittman.
