TWINSBURG -- The Twinsburg Garden Club will host Judy Semroc, conservation outreach specialist with the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, May 11 at Christ the King Lutheran Church.

She will talk dragonflies with "Flying Jewels: The Beauty of Dragonflies and Damselflies." The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m., followed by refreshments and the program at 7:45 p.m.

Semroc brings awareness through words and photography. She co-authored the booklet, "Dragonflies and Damselflies of Northeast Ohio."

In recent years, there has been an enormous increase in interest in the "odonata," inspiring in their appearance and incredible flying abilities. They are indicators of water quality, giving a snapshot of the health of our streams, lakes ands wetlands. Conspicuous and easily observed adult dragonflies and damselflies are just part of an amazing life cycle.

Depending upon the species, adults may only live for a few weeks to a few months. The adults exist primarily to reproduce, and serve important ecological roles as predators of small insects -- including lots of mosquitoes. Almost any aquatic habitat in Ohio has some dragonflies and damselflies, including an exceptional one in Summit County.

In other presentations, Semroc discusses the human impact on plants and animals in a variety of ecosystems, using macro photography to highlight the "faces" of the affected creatures. Semroc also gives alternative practices to better protect the imperiled species and their important habitats.

Semroc began as a volunteer with the natural areas division of the museum, assisting in plant surveys, field trips and natural history research, while still teaching middle school science.

"I enjoyed the work so much that when a position became available and it was offered to me, I jumped at the chance," Semroc said.

She has worked in the position for six years and has been a naturalist for 14 years.

The Twinsburg Garden Club welcomes visitors to attend the program.
