Aurora -- The Rev. Powell Woods of Bainbridge Township became a "vacancy pastor" at Hope Lutheran Church on Feb. 3.

"I retired from Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Solon in 2010. I was 70 years old and decided it was time to let some younger people do the job," said Woods.

He has been a pastor for 20 years, 17 of which he spent at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. Before becoming a pastor, Woods taught linguistics and English literature at the University of Wisconsin for four years. He then entered the business world, working at Reliance Electric for nine years followed by Nestle for six years as vice president of human resources.

"I joined the ministry because I felt that's where the Lord wanted me to be," said Woods.

"After I retired in Solon, I became a part-time pastor in Mantua. My wife Karen and I had attended church at Hope Lutheran and loved it. They offered me a job and I took it. It is very convenient because I live so close.

"I am a vacancy pastor which means I lead Sunday services, but do not have office hours during the week," he added.

Woods is a worship leader, teaches Bible studies and is available for spiritual counseling. "Hope Lutheran has a wonderful, energetic, enthusiastic congregation. We welcome all people to worship with us," he said.
