Apollo's Fire launches its 25th Anniversary season with a large-scale program of choral works, never before heard on period instruments in Northeast Ohio.

Artistic Director Jeannette Sorrell conducts an ensemble of 36 performers. The program includes the festive Celebrate this Festival (Ode for the Birthday of Queen Mary), selections from King Arthur and Dido & Aeneas, and to close, the dramatic and poignant Funeral Music for Queen Mary.

The great Henry Purcell wrote his most majestic music for royal events at Westminster Abbey - from joyous birthday celebrations for the Queen to the heartbreakingly beautiful lamentations at her funeral. Vocal soloists, strings, lutes, recorders, trumpets, percussion, organ, and the acclaimed

Apollo's Singers join in this sumptuous program.

The five guest artists include Molly Netter and Eric Brenner, making their Apollo's Fire solo debuts alongside favorites of the Apollo's Fire stage: Amanda Powell, Karim Sulayman, and Jeffrey

Strauss. They are joined by the acclaimed Apollo's Singers:

"I am thrilled to open the season with this majestic and rarely-heard music

of Henry Purcell," Sorrell said. "Purcell is like Monteverdi in that they are both among the top six to seven great composers of all time, but are not household names since their music doesn't really work on modern instruments. So symphony orchestras don't play their music. I think people will be stunned to discover this resplendent music that Purcell wrote to mark the joys and sorrows of the royal family. This music was intended for Westminster Abbey, so we are delighted to present it in reverberant stone churches."

This program will be sung in its original language, English.
