Author and former Major League Baseball player Dirk Hayhurst will visit the Hudson Library and Historical Society on Monday, February 24, at 7 p.m. to discuss his newest book "Bigger Than the Game: Restitching a Major League Life," in a live interview with News Channel 5 Sports Director Andy Baskin.
In Bigger Than the Game Hayhurst reveals a hidden side of America’s favorite pastime. Recounting his own struggles, he highlights problems that plague the Major Leagues—prescription drug abuse and depression, as well as the stigma faced by players seeking professional help. With compassion and humor, Hayhurst finds the human side of the high stakes world of pro sports.
"Hayhurst has done more than take us inside our national pastime. He’s provided us with a window to our national consciousness. 'Bigger than the Game' represents Hayhurst’s thought-provoking legacy to the sport," said John Paul Morosi of Fox Sports.
Andy Baskin is the Sports Director at Cleveland’s Newsnet 5. He is the owner of Baskin Broadcasting and has worked for various local TV and radio stations, ESPN, ABC-CBS TV Networks and ThisWeek Newspapers. He holds a B.A. in communications from Kent State University. Baskin has earned Two Emmys, an AP award and awards form the Cleveland Press Club and the Society of Professional Journalists. He is also a 2011 Ohio Broadcasters Hall of Fame inductee.
