Stow -- Commercial Aviation will continue a more-than-10-year tradition of offering plane rides during Stow Pride this year.

Al Beckwith, owner of Commercial Aviation, said residents can purchase a plane ride for three people, with a total weight not to exceed 375 pounds, in a Cessna-172 Skyhawk for $85. Flights will depart from Kent State University Airport.

The flights will last 20 minutes and fly approximately 1,000 feet above the ground. The rides can be taken throughout the duration of Stow Pride, from June 23 to July 4, Beckwith said.

"We can either go east and go around Kent State University and Lake Rockwell, or we go northwest to the area around Blossom Music Center and over Gorge Park in Cuyahoga Falls," he said.

Residents will have the opportunity to catch a view of city landmarks, such as Stow City Hall, or see their home from the air, he said.

As part of the flight, residents will receive background information about aviation, a look at the flight instruments and a chance to observe pre-flight checks, said Beckwith.

"I recommend bringing a camera," he said, "so everyone can take a picture standing in front of the air plane before the flight."

Flight times are from 5 to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., on weekends and July 4. All flights can be rescheduled if they are canceled due to bad weather, Beckwith said.

The Stow-Munroe Falls Chamber of Commerce will receive a portion of the proceeds from the flights, he said.

Beckwith said even though the planes used by his company are smaller in size, residents do not need to worry about having a safe flight. He said Commercial Aviation has been in business since 1966, and he has a total of 350,000 hours in the air.

Reservations are required to take a plane ride.

"We'll start with whoever calls first for a particular day," said Beckwith.

Interested residents should call 330-686-1234 for reservations and leave their name and phone number if no one is available.

Gift certificates are available.
